Accessibility statement

Texva wants the documents teachers make to be readable by every student — including blind students using a screen reader. This page says how far the PDFs Texva exports go, and what you need to do for your own documents to meet the standard.

1. PDFs exported from Texva

Every PDF Texva exports is a tagged PDF:

  • Headings, paragraphs, lists, tables (with header rows) and figure captions carry their proper roles, so a screen reader reads them in structure and can jump between headings.
  • The document language is written into the PDF, so the reader picks the right voice.
  • The document title is written into the PDF and shown in the viewer's title bar.
  • Images with a description are read out by that description; decorative figures, page backgrounds, headers and footers are marked so readers skip them.

2. The PDF/UA-1 standard

Turn on Accessible PDF (PDF/UA-1) in the Export dialog to check a document against PDF/UA-1 (ISO 14289-1). With it on, Texva:

  • gives every formula a text alternative (its LaTeX source, unless you wrote your own description);
  • uses a figure's caption as its description when it has none;
  • does not export while the document breaks the standard — for example a picture without a description, or a skipped heading level — and shows you what to fix.

3. What the author does

Software cannot guess what a picture means for the lesson. The Accessibility tab in the editor's side rail lists:

  • pictures, graphs and diagrams without a description (with an AI suggestion button and a "decorative" option);
  • headings in the wrong order (with a one-click fix);
  • text below the WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratio (4.5:1);
  • tables without a header row, and links that do not say where they go.

4. Current limits

  • This statement covers exported PDF documents. The editor interface itself has not yet been fully evaluated against WCAG; we are working on it.
  • Formulas are read through a text alternative, not as MathML inside the PDF.
  • The LaTeX source export (.tex) is not tagged: common LaTeX engines (XeTeX, Tectonic) do not support PDF tagging yet.

5. Reporting a problem

If you meet a Texva document your screen reader cannot read, email support@texva.app with the document's name or the PDF attached. We reply within 5 working days.
