Using and adapting it

A certificate or an invitation is judged by eye from a metre away, so only three things deserve size: the recipient’s name, the reason, and the school. Resist adding lines — each one you add shrinks the other three. For a large print run, leaving the name blank and writing it in ink looks better than setting it in an ordinary typeface; if you do print names, run one sheet and look at it from across the room before printing the batch. The landscape format and the border are already set, and recolouring is one change in the brand kit rather than an edit to each element.

Common questions

How do I print one for a whole class?

Two ways. Leave the name line blank, print the batch and write each one in by hand — fastest, and it looks more formal. Or fill the name from a document variable and export one copy per name; the layout is identical across the batch because they all come from one typeset page.

Does the landscape format print correctly?

Yes. The paper size and orientation live in the document rather than in a print dialog, so the PDF is already the right way round before it reaches the printer — the single most common failure when a certificate is made in a word processor.

Do I need to know LaTeX to use this template?

No. You edit it like an ordinary document — type, drag blocks, insert formulas from a visual keyboard. LaTeX only runs underneath to set the page, and you can still export the source if you want it.
